Small Businessman: “I have the right to attack back”

Chet Karnas, President of Lone Sun Builders in Albuquerque, New Mexico has been a victim of abusive tactics employed by the Carpenters Local Union 1319 for the past eight months. Mr. Karnas has run his construction business for 22 years that prides itself on fair wages, excellent benefits and he said “The best 50 men and women he knows.”

Eight months ago the Local 1319 began a campaign against his company using two different types of protests, picketing and bannering job sites by holding signs that say “Shame on you Lone Sun Builders” in an effort to organize his company.

In response to the protesting, Mr. Karnas decided to create and launch a blog to counter and draw attention to the deplorable tactics that were used on Lone Sun Builders. He said “I felt like I was being attacked, so I have the right to attack back.” Karnas said he wanted to “Utilize the media to expose the Carpenters Local Union 1319 for what they were doing” to his business.

His blog provides viewers with video updates and news articles surrounding the protest against his business. The success of this blog has lead to articles in top beltway conservative political news blogs including “Red State” and “Big Government.”

I am a member of a union and have served as a union delegate. As such, I have had to confront management on behalf of workers’ grievences and in negotiating new contracts. I sleep well at night with the knowledge that my representations were valid and legitimate.
I cannot say the same about these protesters and the strategy and tactics they are using. It has all the appearance of extortion of a successful business under the guise of promoting fair working conditions. Most telling is the organizer’s demeanor — trying to shield his identity with the hoody and shades — and his inability/unwillingness to articulate his position. Any legitimate union rep WELCOMES the opportunity to use the microphone of the press to make his case.
“SHAME ON” the elected representatives of Carpenters Local 1319.
